Greatest Children’s Game of All Time

Have you ever had the experience that you were being eaten alive by a group of 4 year olds?  You are supposed to be the teacher or camp counselor, or scout leader, but find yourself quickly becoming the grownup that nobody is listening to as the children quickly figure out that you don’t have control over the situation.  Don’t panic, let me introduce you to greatest children’s game of all time.  If you work with kids in any capacity (that includes having your own), then you need to learn this.

Behold!  The wonder and the glory that is “Duck and Jump”.  In eight years of karate teaching, teaching groups of kids as large as 75 at one time, this game has NEVER failed to get the kids:

1.excited and having fun

2. listening to you attentively.

How do you play it?  Well Basically, there are three steps

1.  assemble all the kids into a circle

2. swing a soft object at their heads saying “Duck!”, at which point they have to duck down to avoid being hit

3.  then swing previously stated soft object at their feet and yell “Jump” and they have to jump over to avoid being hit

-if the kids are older than six, you can say that if they get hit, they are out.  If under six, don’t bother.  Most of them won’t have the motor skills to jump high and fast enough.  Just have fun.

Thats it.  I’m not joking when I say this game always works.  Stash it away in your mind, and try it for yourself the next time you are the only one in the room over 3 feet tall.

To Your Success,

Sensei Joseph
